From Face-to-Face to e-Learning: A Hands-on Workshop

Introduction

This five-week online workshop focuses on how to rapidly convert face-to-face courses into e-learning formats. It offers participants approaches, methods, tools, tips and techniques to do so. This programme is particularly useful for trainers and specialists involved in the delivery of training workshops who, due to the pandemic, are confronted with uncertainty and face serious challenges in delivering face-to-face courses. Participants will be introduced to rapid conversion tools, tips and techniques, best practices and recommended approaches to engage and support online learners. They will learn to use several proven quality and accessibility frameworks to guide their conversion and design efforts.

Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Choose from three e-learning/online course delivery formats
  • Choose appropriate tools for content development
  • Use action mapping to re-align content and activities with performance objectives.
  • Select appropriate instructional methods for online learning based on the content and objectives
  • Use appropriate e-learning authoring and instructional video development tools.
  • Design a sample course in Moodle

Course methodology

The course is delivered entirely online.

The course will take five weeks with two webinar sessions per week, Mondays and Thursdays, 2:00 - 4:00 PM Rome time. Each week, participants will go through a number of assigned modules and reading materials, complete weekly assignments and exercises, and participate in discussion forums to share experiences, questions and comments, as well as receive feedback from the instructors.

The webinar sessions will be conducted through the Zoom web conferencing platform. Course activities and the weekly discussion forum will be available on the UNKampus, UNSSC’s Learning Platform.

Approximate time commitment to fully participate in this course (completing pre-work, attending webinars, forum discussions, etc.) is 6-8 hours per week (2-4 hours preparation + 4 hours of webinars).

Course contents

The online course will cover topics such as:

Week 1: Preparing to convert a face-to-face course to an e-learning/online course

  • Conversion methods and rapid e-learning/online course development tools;
  • Conducting content analysis for an e-learning project.

Week 2: Content analysis and re-designing a face-to-face content for online delivery

  • Writing performance objectives;
  • Choosing appropriate instructional strategies, media and learning methods;
  • Determining e-learning level of interaction and creating a prototype.

Week 3: Developing the course components and modules

  • Choosing and using appropriate e-learning developments tools:
    • Self-paced authoring tools;
    • Training video production tools;
    • Audio production tools;
  • Producing a sample self-paced module using appropriate production tools.

Week 4: Deploying courses in Moodle and Facilitating Instructor-led Online Courses

  • Structuring courses in Moodle;
  • Facilitating instructor-led synchronous sessions in virtual classrooms.

Week 5: Facilitating Instructor-led Online Courses and Evaluating Learning and Training

  • Applying the Kirkpatrick four-level evaluation.

Target audience

This course is for anyone involved in organizing learning and training events to develop others. It is geared to trainers, facilitators, managers, leaders, specialists, resource persons, instructors, etc.
