The Online Course ‘Introduction to Market-Based Approaches’ aims at providing the participants with a fundamental understanding about the principles of Market-Based Approaches (MBA) and how to start embedding them with the program lifecycle. This training targets mainly humanitarian and development organizations and staff, especially organizations who have livelihood projects and early recovery projects.
At the end of this course, the participants will have a foundational knowledge of market-based approaches. They will be able to articulate the market systems principles existing in their programs and to use the market-based and systems thinking to improve the performance, impact and accountability of their programs.
Learning Objectives
After this training, the participants will engage in an increased use of market-based approaches in their organizations, and of an enhanced quality of the offered services with more durable solutions.
On the longer-term, the programs will testify of an increased sustainability and scale due to an improved use and implementation of market-based systems approaches.
Training Content
This course will be delivered through 3-hours online live sessions, 2 afternoons per week (Tuesdays and Thursdays) during 3 weeks. The courses will be developed around conferences and interactive learning tool, as applied case studies, according to participants’ experience and interests. The participants are expected to attend all training live sessions to be delivered the certificate at the end of the training.
Chapter 1: Market-Based Approaches Principles
Purpose: To introduce the basics of markets terminology and market systems in order to bring everyone in the course to a baseline understanding, and to build a good foundation about the systems thinking.

Chapter 2: Market Systems Assessments and Analysis
Purpose: To create a good conceptual understanding of the concept of marlet assessments, the followed steps and how to use such assessments to inform programs decisions.

- Selecting the right market assessment tool to use
- Preparing and conducting market assessment/mapping (with examples)
- Analyzing the assessments results and designing intervention actions
Chapter 3: Market Systems in Programs Design and Monitoring
Purpose: To build a good understand of how to bring market systems thinking into the programs design, monitoring and evaluation and their reflection into the organization procedures.

- Using facilitation approaches and how to build partnerships
- How to measure differently to support the MBA
- MBA reflections in procurement and financial procedures

About the Trainer
Maha Hayek
Maha is a market systems development specialist with over six years’ of experience in development and humanitarian contexts, working with the MAAN Development Center, DAI, the Palestinian Agricultural Relief Committees and Oxfam. Maha has contributed to the implementation of many international development programs, with different donors, such as SIDA-Sweden, DFID-UK, and DFAT-Australia. Through her interventions, Maha analyzes and assesses the needs of different economic sectors, identify the related market failures, design and develop intervention models and assure such interventions have sustainable impact to contribute to the economic development.

This course is designed for experienced practicioners working in humanitarian of development contexts. The conditions to attend the training are as follows:
- Have good working experience in a humanitarian or development context.
- Managerial level staff with ability to influence operations and practice (e.g., advisors, technical specialists, program managers and business development managers).
