Organization: University of Geneva
Start date: 27 Sep 2021
End date: 1 Oct 2021
Registration deadline: 2 Aug 2021

Being embedded within the distinctive setting of Geneva, and benefit of the strong ties of the UNIGE with the many international governmental and nongovernmental Geneva-based organizations, the MCR Programme exposes students to international expertise with unique networking opportunities.

The module on Child protection strategies and policies deals with the status of parenthood in the CRC and the child–family–state triangle, introduces the concept of child protection, and provides a comparative overview of the different child protection system models. It also opens the discussion about how the focus on specific child protection issues contributes or may not contribute to the strengthening of child protection systems. In relation to this aspect, two specific issues will be addressed child protection from trafficking and child protection in emergencies. We will then concentrate on the link between children’s rights and child protection systems, and the connection between human rights and professional practices. Two cases of implementing child protection programmes will be presented, namely, the occupied Palestinian territory and West Africa. After a discussion on positive experiences to strengthen child protection systems, a lecture on the perspectives of children and parents on child protection and placement from an ethnographic viewpoint will close the module.

Over 5 days the module will cover the following topics

Day 1: introduction to child protection strategies and policies

Day 2: child protection systems - regional and local contexts

Day 3: children’s rights and the child protection systems

Day 4: child protection systems - a thematic approach

Day 5: critical discussion

Lectures are given by international experts in the field of children’s rights and child protection from the academic world, intergovernmental bodies and non-governmental institutions. The participation of these prominent academics and highly skilled field experts with various types of expertise and from different countries ensures multidisciplinary and cultural perspectives on children’s rights.

How to register:
